About Summer in French

We offer language instruction for every child from the beginner to the bilingual student. Activities are age appropriate and tailored to the language level of the child. Each week focuses on a theme with a variety of special activities, including visits from exotic animals, puppet shows, cooking, theater, fashion, art and perfume workshops—all excellent opportunities for children to increase their vocabulary and stimulate their conversation skills. Outdoor activities take place at a nearby playground and at the Boston Common.

We focus on creating a dynamic, fun and comfortable learning experience in order for children to develop a love for languages. In this way, children become experiential learners, but more than just learning a new language, they will interpret the world from a different perspective.

Weekly Themes

Week 1: Les Beaux-Arts / Fine Arts
Art is an excellent medium for conveying language and this week is sure to bring out each child’s creativity and passion. Great for visual learners, children will create unique projects using many types of media and have their own vernissage at the end of the week for parents to admire.

Week 2: Atelier des inventeurs / Inventors' Workshop
Kids let their imagination run loose this week when they invent the craziest of machines and create a future where anything is possible. Drawing from traditional French pioneers such as Les Frères Lumières and legendary Citroën engineering, they will invent the machines using recycled materials to make our world a better place.

Week 3: Musique francophone / Francophone Music
From Sénégal to Québec, kids will discover diverse francophone music while learning French through rhythms and songs. A perfect way for auditory learners to practice pronunciation and tap into their listening skills.

Week 4: La pâtisserie / Baking
From galettes to financiers, kids will enjoy discovering and making regional French pâtisseries recipes that are sure to make their mouths water! A hands-on approach to learning and interacting in French, they will learn valuable teamwork skills in the kitchen and compile yummy recipe books!

Week 5: Sauvons notre environnement / Save our Planet!
Drawing on the momentum of the COP 21 conference in Paris, children will explore the environmental challenges and successes of our world today. They will learn about the cycle of water and pollution as well as ways to reduce our carbon footprint and save animals from extinction.

Week 6: Nos cinq sens / Our Five Senses
This exploration will focus on self-awareness and how we relate physically to the world around us. Perfect for kinesthetic learners, they will be able to associate different movements, smells, light, sounds and flavors to new words.

Week 7: La mode / Fashion
Kids will use colors, textures and textile prints to stylize their favorite outfits all while learning vocabulary of clothing and words unique to fashion. Through techniques inspired by French fashion designers, older kids will stylize a photo shoot and create their own line of clothing and accessories.

Week 8: Les Chefs Gourmets / Gourmet Chefs
Every Michelin star chef needs to start somewhere! This week, kids will discover the ingredients that go into creating delicious meals from different francophone regions. They will rate their favorite recipes to recreate them for parents at the end of the week. This buffet is sure to please the most discerning palettes!

Week 9: Le Théâtre / Theater
Calling all young actors! Theater encompasses a wide range of skills from embodying a character to interpretive movement and is an excellent medium through which to learn a language. Kids will move, shout and scream their way through imaginary spaces—what better to way to make a word stick in their head than to act it out!

Week 10: Les Jeux Olympiques / The Olympics
With national pride sure to hit a high this summer, kids will feel the Olympic fever! Interactive games will teach them the value of teamwork while showcasing their athletic talents and helping them discover the rules of different sports. They will stage their own mini-Olympics while getting to know the francophone countries playing at the Rio games.

Week 11: Chasse au trésor / Treasure Island Living on an island can be hard but when a scavenger hunt for a French pirate’s loot promises unknown treasures, it is sure to get kids asking questions—en français!
