About this Class

Frère d'âme, the first novel by Franco-Senegalese novelist David Diop, which received the Prix Goncourt des Lycéens in 2018 and the International Booker Prize 2021 in its English translation, recounts the experience of a Senegalese tirailleur during the First World War in Europe. Through an in-depth reading of the text, we will analyze the peculiarities of a literary style that combines realism and psychological reflection on the human condition in the face of horror.

In this course, you will:
Understand the historical context and geography represented; grasp the thematic and stylistic peculiarities of the author; generate a philosophical reflection on the condition of man in the face of a tragic experience; use a vocabulary of literary analysis; offer an informed and personal vision of a historical event with a global impact; state conclusions in relation to the in-depth study of a text
