About Summer in French

We offer language instruction for every child from the beginner to the bilingual student. Activities are age appropriate and tailored to the language level of the child. Each week focuses on a theme with a variety of special activities, including visits from exotic animals, puppet shows, cooking, theater, fashion, art and perfume workshops—all excellent opportunities for children to increase their vocabulary and stimulate their conversation skills. Outdoor activities take place at a nearby playground and at the Boston Common.

We focus on creating a dynamic, fun and comfortable learning experience in order for children to develop a love for languages. In this way, children become experiential learners, but more than just learning a new language, they will interpret the world from a different perspective.

Weekly Themes

Week 1: Les beaux-arts / Fine Arts
Great for visual learners, art is an excellent medium for conveying language and this week is sure to bring out each child’s creativity and passion. Through the discovery of unique artists and their masterpieces, children will create projects using many types of media and have their own vernissage (private art viewing) at the end of the week for parents to admire.

Week 2: Architecture Parisienne / Parisian Architecture
Paris and its many magical qualities inspire through its culture, people, architecture, and je ne sais quoi. Children will discover the vibrant neighborhoods, landmarks, and history of this unique city through its streets, music, and art.

Week 3: Expériences scientifiques / Get Your Lab Coats!
STEM lovers can let their imaginations run loose this week when they discover the reactive properties of materials and how they interact with one another - all in French! Drawing from traditional French pioneers such as Marie Curie and Louis Pasteur, this hands-on week of science is sure to get them into lab coats.

Week 4: Cinéma / Cinema
Our little Truffauts will hone their creative senses through sketches, role play, and set design activities. Get ready for some masterpieces of the septième art !

Week 5: La Mode / Fashion
Kids will use colors, textures, and textile prints to stylize their favorite outfits all while learning clothing-related vocabulary and words unique to fashion. Through techniques inspired by French fashion designers, older kids will stylize a photo shoot and create their own line of clothing and accessories.

Week 6: Cuisine du monde / World Kitchen
Every Michelin star chef needs to start somewhere! This week, kids will discover the ingredients that go into creating delicious meals while having fun and being creative with the presentation of each succulent dish. Their work will go into preparing for the discerning palettes of...their parents!

Week 7: Petits détectives / Little Gumshoes
Observation skills and logic are key to unlocking the mysteries of this week’s activities! Solving riddles and stealth will prove key to unmasking the villain.

Week 8: Petits diplomates / Little Diplomats
In the 75th anniversary year of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we could not pass the opportunity to explore with children how French, a traditional language of diplomacy, is used to build consensus, express opinion, and mediate conflict. But how do these inalienable rights translate to a child’s world and what does it mean to be a global citizen? Through teamwork and activities centered on understanding different perspectives, we will discover the building blocks of cooperation in an inclusive and nurturing environment.

Week 9: Écologie-biodiversité / Ecology and Biodiversity
Learning to take care of our planet starts with discovering the world beyond what we see and experience. Kids will learn about different types of plant and animal environments and the characteristics that make their biodiversity unique. From the Versailles gardens to the Boréale forests of Quebec and the jungles of Madagascar, these worlds apart all need our nurturing and protection. Planting the seed early helps children better understand and play a part in our ecosystem.

Week 10: Les chefs pâtisserie / Pastry Chefs
From galettes to financiers, kids will enjoy discovering and making regional French pâtisseries recipes that are sure to make their mouths water! A hands-on approach to learning and interacting in French, they will learn valuable team-work skills in the kitchen and compile yummy recipe books!

Week 11: Contes et légendes francophones / Francophone Tales and Legends Storytelling will guide this week’s activities through traditional tales of France, Quebec, and Africa. Diverse characters will inspire kids to create their own story.
