To avoid over a month-long gap between the end of the fall and the beginning of the winter sessions, we have decided to offer some short programs to keep you busy! What can you expect during this new inter-session? Most classes will meet 1h30 twice a week for two weeks (6h total). If you’re up for a little challenge, our grammar boot camps will meet twice a week for 2h (8h total) and brush up classes will take place 1h30 three times a week (9h total).  The boot camps and brush up classes are meant to be review sessions to strengthen your skills and get you prepared for our next session.  All other classes are meant to provide an overview of many different topics of interest such as a look at the multi-faceted regions of Québec and Nouvelle-Aquitaine; the latest styles and trends in France; French holiday traditions; pop culture; French songs and more.  If you want to meet up with some of your favorite classmates and friends or make new ones, our casual and formal conversations will create the perfect atmosphere for that.  Finally, if you want to improve your listening comprehension and vocabulary, our Fun with dictées is the perfect class for you!

Fables de la Fontaine with Bojana | Advanced 3-4 to Proficient 1
Tuesday/Thursday 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
It is often said that poetry cannot be appreciated in translation. This is certainly the case for the work of the poet and French fabulist Jean de La Fontaine, who spent much of his career collecting and reimagining the stories of other great preachers of parables from around the world. In the late 17th century, he published his famous compendium of contes, Fables, an anthology of didactic tales, mostly apologues of animals with human feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. His writing was graceful, the commonplace morals drawn at the end of the tales were frank, and his contributions to French storytelling have been immeasurable. In this class, you will read La Fontaine’s stories to understand what is impossible to demonstrate in translation and see why La Fontaine’s stories are so revered.

Unique amongst an almost entirely English-speaking Canada, Québec has a strong sense of territorial and francophone pride, and is replete with food, music, idioms, and a sense of humor all its own. Learn why North American history would not be the same without the founding of Québec City along the St. Lawrence River, the cultural contributions of Montréal, or the stories of indigenous Canadians who have long called the region home.
